Yoga for Scoliosis

Correct imbalances to make your back long and strong
Sexy, sloping curves are what make a woman’s body beautiful. But those same curves can be dangerous when they’re in your back. Scoliosis, a curvature of the spine, is a medical condition that affects about 6 million Americans, most of them women. “These spinal twists and turns – whether extreme or minor – can create a domino effect that knocks the rest of the body out of whack,” says Elise Browning Miller, creator of Yoga for Scoliosis DVD and workshops. When your body is misaligned that can bring on a slew of problems including back pain, shallow breathing and sciatica (sharp pains in the buttocks and thighs due to a compressed sciatic nerve.) But don’t let that throw you a curve. These poses can help correct imbalances while making your back long and strong.
Things to Keep in Mind At Class
Each person’s curve is unique to them so only you know what aggravates or alleviates it. Stay in touch with your body throughout class and don’t be afraid to modify poses or use props, such as a block, bolster, chair or wall to help you reach proper alignment.
