Zen Mind, Buff Body by Kathleen Kaster
Gotta Love Yoga!
Feb 12, 2008Are you ready to get more fit than you’ve ever been before? Maybe you even made a New Year’s resolution to get fit this year. Unfortunately, it’s not unusual to have lost your enthusiasm for exercise by the time Valentine’s Day rolls around. But rest assured, yoga is an amazing and effective tool to help you implement your new healthy habits, permanently!
There are no quick fixes for weight loss and stress reduction, but with dedication and commitment to a regular yoga practice, your life will begin to improve on all levels. When you find an activity that you are passionate about, such as yoga, it’s a wonderful way to help you stay motivated and inspired about your health, your relationships, your career, and your life.
Now that we’re solidly past the holidays and into the new year, take this opportunity for a fresh start in EVERY area of your life. Thank goodness! Out with the old and in with the new – that’s what happens every time we step on our yoga mats and consciously start moving and breathing. From the first sun salutation to the final pose of savasana, we have been transformed mentally, physically, energetically, emotionally and spirituality.
I have been practicing Ashtanga yoga daily for the last 10 years and still look forward to going to my Mysore Ashtanga class at 7 am, six days a week. That’s not to say there aren’t some mornings when I’m exhausted or don’t feel well and consider skipping it. But I drag myself to class anyway. When I walk into the studio, smell the incense, and see the smiling faces of my teacher and peers, I am filled with love and appreciation for my life and the practice. I always leave the class feeling recharged and happy for the rest of my day! If recommitting fully to your practice seems overwhelming, try adding just one more practice session a week – even a brief one – for the next 4 weeks. Then watch and see if it helps you progress and adds more peace of mind to your life.
My daily yoga practice has been my saving grace on so many levels -- helping me grow in my practice and in my personal life as well. I even met my fiancé at my early morning class, so you just never know what your practice could bring into your life! The next time your mind tells you to stay home and skip your yoga practice, override those thoughts and go to class anyway. After all, your life partner might be just one mat away.
