Underage and Overscheduled

Jun 30, 2008

I'd rather see a child make yoga an occasional, enjoyable practice at home than try to cram a class into an already overscheduled week. Acknowledging reality, though, means that not many of us are going to spend the long summer days just walking in the woods with our kids--there are activities galore, and most of us feel the pressure to join.

Focus Pocus

Feb 27, 2008

My daughter can get so focused on her drawing that she can't hear me call her for dinner the first four times, until I go whisper directly into her ear. During lots of other less-than-favorite activities, however, she and the rest of our family often have a bit of trouble staying in the proverbial zone.

The Rainbow Connection

The pride that we feel at Lola's great and varied eating is tempered heavily, however, by the fact that our three-year-old son will only eat foods that are white or tan. This stresses me out to no end.

Perk Up Your Posture

One recent wintry afternoon, my household was unusually serene: Tristan was happily playing at his train table, Lola was drawing away next to me at the counter, and I had, unbelievably, gotten my act together to get dinner into the slow cooker. I glanced over at Lola and noticed how she was sitting: back straight, spine long, perched slightly forward on her chair. Then I did a little self-scan: Slouch City.

Self-beliefs

I was surprised, and not in a good way, to hear my six-year-old daughter say, "I'm pretty much always shy," to a friend the other day.

Poses for Mommy and A Not So Wee Me

Jan 7, 2008

It's been six years now, but I still remember clearly (okay, not that clearly) the early, sleepy months after my daughter was born, and the comfort of nursing and rocking with a snuggly baby on my chest. Attempting to maintain some sort of a yoga practice in those days, I'd put her on the floor beside me, where she'd happily gaze up at my sun salutations.
