One Time At Yoga Camp…
How to Survive Yoga Camp
Jun 25, 2008
Two years ago I had never been to a yoga camp. Yoga camps weren’t for me. I wasn’t a person that would go to a yoga camp. I made up the term “yoga camp” because I wanted to make fun of people who went away to ashrams. I was of course way cooler than all of that. I didn’t need to go because I already had it all figured out.
I thought ashrams were for daytime visits only. I’ve been to a few and checked that off the spiritual evolution requirements I came up with for my yoga diary. Everyone knows you get sucked in and brainwashed at night during sleeping hours that start at 7pm. That’s when they pump thoughts in subconsciously through some sort of speaker system that runs through the whole place. The reason no one has figured it out is because when each person hears the subliminal messages repeated they feel special, like they are having some sort of individual religious experience that makes you feel like the chosen one, so you keep the message to yourself only to never find out it is a pre-recorded looping speech, part of a ploy by the cult to take over your life.
It was Easter weekend two years back. My friend told me about this place called Ananda Ashram that you could get to in an hour on the train. It sounded scary already. But two teachers were going to be there for this weekend retreat that I was interested in: Krishna Das , and Dharma Mittra. I’ve heard Krishna Das’s music in pretty much every yoga class and in friends’ apartments. His voice embodies rock star cool so I figured I’d like to meet this guy. I’ve taken Dharma Mittra’s yoga class in the city a handful of times and there is endless to learn there (go to his class, it’s amazing!) so I figured, ok, I’m going to Yoga Camp!
