Alternative Medicine Q&A
Q: Osteoporosis runs in my family. I practice yoga every day and take a calcium-plus-vitamin-D supplement. Is that enough to protect my bones? --Lexi G., Albany, NY
A: It depends on your risk factors and how dense your bones are now. Ask your doctor about a bone-density test (a DEXA scan). If it shows normal density and you have no other risk factors, your current exercise and calcium-plus-D supplements are likely all you need for now. Make sure you're getting at least 1,500 mg of calcium daily. If you have osteopenia (mild bone loss), try adding soy to your diet and weights to your workouts, then get another DEXA scan after 6 months to see if that stabilizes your bone loss.
Another question is that I have been using hand cream/oil for the past 25 years but I find now that my hands and feet seem to be losing that "smooth" feeling.
I feel very weak and seem to have a heavy head feeling now.
