Ask the Yoga Teacher
Yoga on your period?
Is it safe to practice yoga when I am on my period? -Zarna
Of course! In fact, poses like Child's Pose and Paschimottanasana (seated forward bending) are very calming to the nervous system and can help alleviate menstrual cramps. What is not recommended is inverting -- Handstand,
Forearm Stand , Headstand, or Shoulderstand -- (some Iyengar teachers also say no to Urdhva Dhanurasana -- full backbend). The reason is because menstruation involves a downward flow of energy in the body -- as does having babies, urination and defecation. Yogis believe that by going upside down you are messing with nature -- the natural flow of things. Put your
Legs Up the Wall instead!
