Flex Time: Ankle

By Kristen Dollard

Give yourself a yogic foot rub with this section from our series, Flex Time.

Your ankle moves in four directions: It can point, flex, supinate (turn out), and pronate (turn in). Why should you care? Because it's a lot easier to remove tension from the extremities than from, say, the middle vertebrae, so think of this pose list as another way to give yourself the benefits--increased circulation, decreased swelling--of a divine foot rub.

Starting in a cross-legged position, take your right foot with both hands. Rotate your right thigh outward, bringing the outer side of your ankle to rest on your left thigh, preferably in your hip crease. Repeat on other side.

My grandmother recently asked me to teach her some simple yoga moves that would stimulate her brain because when she gets home from work at night and turns the television on, she can never stay awake until the end of the program. What are some simple moves that can be tried for this problem.
