Avoid Office Chair Butt
It’s every office worker’s fear: the expanding butt. You can just feel it flattening and spreading from the constant sitting. Here are 10 fun and easy ways to remedy any squishing of the behind.
1. Don’t stress about it.
Stress always makes matters worse. If you know that you’re going to miss the gym or your yoga class tonight because you're stuck late at the office, try to go with the flow. Reclaim your calmness by simply making yourself aware of your breath for a few moments. Once you're back on a steady track, get the work done pronto so you can split.
2. Get moving.
Try to think of ways you can get out of that chair. For example, when you're on the phone squeeze in a little toning by standing up and doing some mini lunges and squats.
3. Take walks.
As often as you can get away, carve out half of your lunch break for a walk. Don't use the whole hour for walking or you'll be stuck eating at your desk (which is never a good idea). But at least get your lunch at the deli farther from the office or do a few laps around the building before heading back to your desk.
4. Squeeze it.
For the ultimate stealth sculpting, place a small ball between your legs and squeeze away while you work. You won’t even know you’re doing it after a while, but your sleek butt and toned thighs will tell the tale. You can do this one all day long if you want!
5. Prepare yourself for the chair.
Before you leave for work do yoga's answer to lunges: In Warrior 1, straighten and bend the front knee a few times. Repeat on both sides. You get the lower-body strengthening of lunges combined with the focus of yoga. Try it in Warrior 2 as well. It only takes a few minutes, so squeeze it in while you wait for the shower to warm up or when you’re brushing your teeth.
6. Reach for your toes.
If you've been sitting for a long time, give your body a break by standing up and practicing a few forward bends. It will just take a few moments, and your body will really be happy for the relief from being squished in the chair.
7. Unwind After Work.
Instead of heading straight home to get dinner going, take at least a few moments for yourself because you deserve it after working all day. Ideally, you'd have a daily 5PM yoga class, but at least put together a short routine of your favorite yoga poses to do on your own as soon as you get home. The sooner you feel your mat underfoot, the sooner the stress of the day will fall away.
8. Drink water.
It’s such a simple thing, but so hard: Keeping hydrated with water at work will keep your brain happy and help your body release nasty toxins plus keep your digestion moving smoothly. You'll feel more energetic, which means it's easier to get your work done and then go to yoga class. That's great for your butt, and so is the movement bonus: More trips to the water cooler and rest room--which means fewer long stints stuck sitting in your chair.
9. Find a Healthy Buddy.
Spread your health awareness to a few of your co-workers by sharing your tips and inviting them to let you know their secrets for staying in shape. Your whole office will transform with enthusiasm.
10. Suggest a Yoga Class.
If your office doesn’t offer a yoga class during work hours, suggest it. You may be surprised how many people are interested in a mid-day session. And your company will be rewarded with a happier and healthier staff. That's a win-win proposal.
