Brent Kessel started yoga in typical male fashion: “My girlfriend at the time was a yoga teacher,” he says. But after that first class in 1989, he was hooked. “It was the most physically intense workout I had ever done—and I was a competitive gymnast through most of my adolescence,” says Kessel. “Yoga also gave me a more meditative relationship to my physical exercise.” Today, the financial adviser practices Ashtanga yoga for two hours every morning and has launched his yoga know-how into “Yoga for Money” workshops and a book, It’s Not About the Money (HarperCollins, 2008).
Granted, touching your toes isn’t going to get you a promotion, but focus and a mind-over-matter attitude are two things that will get you far on and off the mat. “Yoga is a physical practice, but it’s really about training the mind to breathe and be still in the midst of discomfort,” he says. “Surrendering that control allows you to have more objectivity in investment and career decisions because there’s not as much attachment to the result. The more we’re emotionally attached you are to something, the more distorted our view of how things actually are becomes. When you’re in the moment you’re able to respond to things as they are.”
